Community Cooperative Kicks-Off “Summer Drive for Hunger”
"For some families, school being out means a certain kind of freedom. For the families we serve, it means just the opposite, "says Tracey Galloway, CEO of Community Cooperative. "The summer months can be the cruelest season for families who can't rely on the schools to feed their hungry children. More than 70 percent of Lee County students qualify for free/reduced breakfast and lunch during the school year. One out of every six of our neighbors is food insecure and cannot depend on consistent meals."
The "Summer Drive for Hunger" kicks off with the first of several collection events scheduled for the coming months at Saks Fifth Avenue, located at the Bell Tower Shops. On Thursday, May 14, 2015, from 5-7pm, Saks will be collecting non-perishable food donations and/or cash contributions and provide music, refreshments, raffle prizes, and 10% of the sales from the evening, all in the "fight against summer hunger" in our area. Each person who donates food and/or a cash contribution will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win $ 5,000, which will be selected on August 18, 2015, at Sam Galloway Ford.
Sam Galloway Ford has generously committed to donate $1 for every pound of food donated through August 18th. Additionally, several other donation events are scheduled including:
