In the hardest hit areas of Lee County, as much as 97% of children are on free or reduced lunch.
But what happens when the children go home for the weekend? Many of these children are going without any food from the time they leave school on Friday until they return on Monday, as well as during school holidays. Parents have been seen digging through the school dumpsters after hours to find food for their families. CCMI has begun a school backpack program in order to get food directly into the hands of the children. We are also working directly with the families of these children to provide access to emergency food through a mobile food pantry program as well as implementing mobile case management services and access to food stamps in order for parents to become sustainable and secure food.
